From Unloved to Unmissable: Rebuilding a Regional Hospitality Growth Engine

When a new owner takes over a business, there’s always a question of where to start. Do you invest heavily and rebuild everything from scratch, or focus on quick wins and build momentum over time?

In this case, it was clear early on that the foundations weren’t there. The business had strong potential, but the marketing, systems, and overall customer experience hadn’t kept up. What followed was not just a refresh, but a full reset of how the business attracts, converts, and retains customers.

This project has been a great example of how much growth can be unlocked when the fundamentals are done properly.

The business, based in the Central West, had recently changed ownership. It had a strong product and location, but the digital experience and backend systems were holding it back. There was no clear customer journey, limited visibility on performance, and no structured way to nurture or retain customers once they had interacted with the brand.

The first step was rebuilding the front door. We launched a new website designed not just to look modern, but to convert. This included enabling online reservations, improving navigation across key pages, and ensuring the site was structured to support discovery through search.

From there, the focus shifted to what happens after someone lands on the site.

We implemented tracking across the full journey to better understand how customers were finding the business, what they were engaging with, and where opportunities existed to improve. At the same time, we introduced automation across key touchpoints including enquiry, booking confirmation, and post-visit follow up. This created a more consistent experience while also opening up opportunities for repeat visits, feedback, and word of mouth.

Since go-live, the growth has been strong and, more importantly, meaningful.

Traffic has increased significantly, with a steady flow of visitors coming through high-intent channels like search and social. More importantly, that traffic is converting. Key pages such as bookings and visit information are seeing high engagement, showing that users are not just browsing but actively planning and taking action.

What’s most interesting is that these results haven’t been driven by heavy campaign spend or constant activity. They’ve come from putting the right foundations in place.

This is where I see many businesses getting stuck, especially in the current environment. There’s often a belief that growth requires more channels, more tools, or a complete overhaul. In reality, the biggest gains often come from stepping back, simplifying, and making what you already have work better.

In this case, a focused reset has enabled:

  • Clear visibility of performance and customer behaviour
  • A smoother path from discovery through to booking
  • Automated touchpoints that support retention and referrals

And importantly, it sets the business up for what comes next. Whether that’s scaling acquisition, introducing more advanced segmentation, or building out lifecycle marketing, the foundations are now there to support it.

The takeaway is simple. Growth doesn’t always come from doing more. Sometimes it comes from doing the basics properly, and building from there.
